3 Essentials For Beautiful Engagement Photos

As promised I am reloading all of my tips and tricks for our wedding.

We will start at the beginning. You've got engaged and now you want to slay your engagement shoot. These photos can be used for several things:

  • Save The Dates

  • Engagement Party Decor

  • Wedding Announcement in local paper

Those are just a few ideas. These photos are for you and your fiancé to capture this special moment in your lives. The best advice I can offer is to not overthink it. It's so easy to get caught up in Pinterest Perfect Pictures. It's ok if you pictures don't look straight out of your favorite fashion magazine.

These photos should be a true reflection of you and your partner. If your goofy, be goofy. If you are foodies, capture eat your favorite meal. If you are fashion forward, slay your favorite designer threads. Plain and simple be you. If you are yourselves the pictures will capture the true essence of who you are as a couple and that is what most important.

Here are the three things you will need in order to have stunning engagement photos.

  1. Find a photographer that fits your style. Some photographers shoot in studio in a controlled environment. Other's like to shoot outdoors at a location. This is truly a preference. There are pros & cons to both, that is truly up to you. When making this decision always ask the photographer if you can have multiple looks and if this will be an additional charge. Ultimately you want to stay in budget. Remember, you can have beautiful photos without breaking the bank!

  2. Coordinate the Coordination as my bae would say. You don't have to be matchy matchy but, you and your partner should look coordinated. If you are going formal each person should have something that makes a statement and standout. If your going causal don't be too causal. You still want to look put together. I will leave examples of our formal and causal looks from our engagement shoot below.

  3. Treat yourself to glam. It's always nice to be pampered. For these special moments it's ok to spend the money to get your hair and makeup professional done. Makeup for photos is very different than your everyday look. For example, everyone should highlight and contour for photos and wear lashes. Depending on lighting your features don't pop unless accentuate your best features. You want to look your best in these pictures that will last a lifetime. Don't let the guys skip the pamper sessions. They should get a nice hair cut, fresh shave, and facial before the photos. Fresh, clear skin always look best on men. We gotta take care of the fellas too!

A day or two before the shoot practice posing together in a mirror. Make up some code words for the poses you like. My fiancé and I always say, "one, two, three serious face." "one, two, three soft smiles." "one, two, three fake laugh". We practiced those few poses and slayed our pictures. If you partner is a male remember they aren't natural selfie takers. They need a little direction. Also, take the photographers direction. Even though we all have that go to pose, let the expert lead. It may seem awkward in the moment but, you can't see their vision through the lens. You have to trust the process. Some of my favorite photos were the ones that felt weird.

Last but, not least. Have fun! This is a special time in your life. Relax, have fun, and enjoy the moment!
